TMJ Toronto Symptoms – Neck Pain Causes and Treatment
Neck pain can be symptoms of TMJ Toronto pain sufferers have to deal with but this is not always the case.
This is a type of pain that is the perfect example of the type of pain that could go on for years because the root cause of the pain was not diagnosed correctly and therefore not treated correctly.
Even many health care practitioners do not make the connection between neck pain and TMJ Toronto patients have. That’s because when this type of pain is caused by a TMJ disorder/syndrome it is “referred pain.” This means that the pain is felt in an area other than where the cause of the pain originates.
When the bite or jaw is not aligned properly then other muscles and ligaments end up compensating and adapting in some way. One of the ways the body adapts to the structural problem of a TMJ problem is through adjusting its posture.
The muscles in your jaw, neck, shoulder and back help to balance your head on top of your spinal column.
Your head is about the size and weight of a bowling ball and your spinal column is about the size of a baseball bat. So imagine a bowling ball was kept in place on top of a baseball bat with a series of rubber bands going out in all directions. Now, imagine just one of those many rubber bands being shortened significantly in length. This would have the tendency to pull the bowling ball off balance in a specific direction. But in order to keep the bowling ball straight on top of the bat some of the other rubber bands would need to stretch and others would need to shorten.
The same type of adaptations take place to keep your head and overall posture straight when one of your jaw muscles or ligaments shorten due to a misaligned bite or jaw. The muscles and ligaments that attach the jaw area to the neck or shoulder muscles need to adapt to help maintain overall posture and a level head.
But this adaptation can cause stress, and then inflammation, in the muscles and ligaments that go from the jaw area to the neck or shoulder as they are compensating. And this inflammation causes neck pain.
Neuromuscular Dentistry treats the root cause of neck pain that is caused by a problem with the TMJ Toronto residents have.
